Profiles of staff under threat
Lloyd Pietersen

Are you a member of staff whose job is at risk?  Would you like to share your story?

This page is dedicated to informing University of Gloucestershire students about the University’s significant change agenda and the impact it will have on YOUR education.

Students stage protest to save jobs, reports the Gloucestershire Echo.

Recently, in her open letter to students, our Vice Chancellor, Professor Patricia Broadfoot, Commander of the British Empire, admitted:

‘it is clear to me that we have been remiss in not communicating directly or clearly with you in advance of changes happening, nor explained the rationale for the decisions that have been necessary’ (ref).

The staff and students in the saveUOG campaign believe that you deserve to be kept informed of these ‘changes’ and should know the impact they will have on YOUR education.

FACT – A number of staff members are facing compulsory redundancy in an effort to cut costs because of financial  mismanagement (ref).  This mismanagement is not the fault of the members of staff at risk but their jobs are being made redundant in order to compensate for managment mistakes.  See the profiles of some of these staff members under the 'Profiles' section of this page.

How will the cuts affect students?

The lecturers’ union UCU believes that the proposed cuts will hurt your education.

   Increasing class sizes
   Endangering teaching standards
+ Losing top research supervisors
= Worsening the student experience

YOU should NOT be paying for this crisis!

Why is this happening?

What has gone so wrong that the university wants to axe staff, cut courses, and sell off Pittville, a vibrant teaching campus?  The same managers who oversaw the accounting errors which led to the targeting of the Faculty of EHS for compulsory redundancies are now overseeing this gamble with YOUR fees and YOUR education.

Isn’t it just a case of chopping off a limb to save the rest?

No! In axing front-line teachers and researchers, they’re cutting off the head.

Cutting lecturers & resources is WRONG!

The sudden departure of pro-VC Paul Bowler (ref) gave management the opportunity to rethink their strategy.  UCU gave university management the opportunity to go back to the negotiating table and together find a sustainable way forward.

Unfortunately, university management remains intransigent in their pursuit of a damaging change agenda. Compulsory redundancies at FCH are only the beginning;  redundancies could soon be coming to a campus near you.

Time to speak up!

University management have kept quiet, and not told students about the implications the cuts will have for their studies and their student experience.  UCU believe it is time to speak up now.  Students pay fees and top-up fees, and are entitled to a high-quality education and student experience.  But cuts in library provisions, larger seminar groups, loss of staff expertise, and cuts in student support services, will damage the reputation of the University and the experience of students now and in the future. UCU action is being taken to protect your courses and your experience, not to inconvenience you.

The University Strategic Plan states 'We are committed to nurturing the holistic development of our staff and students - their academic, social, emotional, physical, cultural and spiritual well-being'.  We think compulsory redundancies contradict this espoused value.
